Author Offers Timeline of American Cuisine in New Book | Food drink

The book begins with a pizza, or American pie as Page calls it, and ends, as it should, with America’s favorite treat, ice cream. A recipe appears at the end of each chapter, no gastronomic skills required. That of pizza, for example, is that of sausages and pepperoni.

Page’s motivation to write a book – his first – came after spending over 15 years working as a producer for ABC and NBC News on shows like “20/20,” “Good Morning America,” and “Weekend. Today ”.

“Television limits the amount of material you can use,” Page said. “I did not choose any subject [for the book], but a dozen. Each chapter could have been a book.

Page spent two years researching and writing. With 1 million restaurants in the United States, you might think that choosing which ones to write about would have been his biggest challenge, but he said it was actually some fact-checking, such as the birthplace of the burger, which was the hardest part.

Page chose restaurants representative of each type of food he wrote about. Skylight Inn BBQ in Ayden, North Carolina is one example; Bordenaro’s Pizza & Pasta, a family-owned pizzeria in Des Moines, Iowa, another. Both are family businesses where the customers know the cooks and the owners know their customers. It alludes to one of the secret ingredients of good food that cannot be found on any menu or in the aisle of a grocery store, a place where memories are created.
