Taste crab and okra stew, learn how African-American cuisine transformed America at an event in downtown Flint

FLINT, MI — The community is invited to enjoy a tasting of African-American cuisine and discover how it changed America in a critically acclaimed documentary.

A screening of the documentary High on the Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, February 23 at Flint’s Black Box, located on the lower level of the Capitol Theater, 140 E. 2nd St., Downtown. town of Flint.

The viewing, hosted by Flint Social Club, will end with free portions of the crab and okra stew featured in the Netflix documentary followed by a panel discussion with local community leaders, according to the event page. Facebook.

The event organizers invite the community to join in a powerful immersion into the African-American origins of American cuisine.

“It’s going to be a really cool event,” Jerin Sage, acting director of venue creation for the What’s Up Downtown project, told MLive-The Flint Journal. “It’s a cultural experience.”

Sage said the event only has 75 tickets and is expected to sell out.
